Diamond Tears by Verena Paloma Jabs at Tatty Devine

Diamond Tears by Verena Paloma Jabs is on from 13th November 2009 to 31st January 2009 at Tatty Devine, 236 Brick Lane, London, E2 7EB.
Private View: 12th November 2009, 6pm-9pm.

Verena Paloma Jabs presents Diamond Tears, a series of eerily beautiful mixed-media collages and animation that explores the imagery of fairy-tales and dreams, and the blurry line that separates them. Diamond Tears will be shown at the Tatty Devine Brick Lane Gallery space from November 13th. A special limited edition necklace accompanies the exhibition.

Verena creates child-like and seemingly innocent silhouettes of animals and figures, morphed with a digitally created background of imaginary landscapes, naïve wonderlands, and dark dreamscapes.

Verena says, "I am fascinated by the innocent imagery of the pictorial illustrations which often accompany fairy-tales, while the narrative itself is often dark and uncanny. Being of English and Russian ancestry, and growing up in Germany before attending school and university in England, I have a keen interest in how different cultures mirror each other's stories and heritage. Living in an era in which advertising and visual media are overpowering our imagination for commercial purposes, fairy-tales as told to children still harbour a sense of humankind's most ancient fantasies, fears, and desires."

Tatty Devine have made a very special limited edition necklace to coincide with the Diamond Tears exhibition. The heart shaped necklace features dream-like silhouettes beneath a glittering gold moon, on a hand-beaded string of shiny black beads. Tatty Devine often work with artists, having collaborated with Rob Ryan, Mark Pawson and Gilbert & George.

The series of images will be displayed in lasercut acrylic frames, combining traditional techniques such as paper cuts and woodcutting with modern technology, and extending the images beyond two dimensions in the same way that our dreams (or nightmares) are carried from sleep into our everyday.
